What Was The First Netflix Original Series

Netflix was founded by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in 1997. In the first appearance, this company only offers streaming media and video on demand online and DVD via mail. Then, exactly in 2013, this company developed the business into film and Television production and online distribution. Due to the development that was done, Netflix gets more subscribers. As of October 2017, there are 109.25 million subscribers worldwide and it includes 52.77 million in the United States.

Talk about the development of Netflix business, you perhaps wonder what the first Netflix original series is. House of Cards is the answer. This is a political thriller web TV series that was premiered in 2013 on the streaming service Netflix. The series was created by Beau Willimon and stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. Until now, the series consist of 5 seasons. Actually, this series is an adaptation of the BBC miniseries of the same name in 1990 that is based on the novel by Michael Dobbs. House of Cards was set in Washington, D.C. The story focuses on Congressman Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) who is a Democrat from 5th congressional district of South Carolina and House Majority Whip. After  he was passed over for appointment as Secretary of State, then he starts an elaborate plan to get the power that is helped by his wife, Claire Underwood (Robin Wright). The point of this series is about the ruthless pragmatism, power and manipulation. Each series consist of 13 episodes.

The series has achieved positive reviews and some award nominations that include 33 Primetime Emmy Award nominations including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor for Spacey and Outstanding Lead Actress for Wright. This also become the first original online only web TV series that receive major Emmy nominations. Besides, the show also get eight Golden Globe Award nominations in which Wright won as Best Actress – Television Series Drama in 2014 and Spacey won as Best Actor – Television Series Drama in 2015.

House of Cards, as mentioned above, was released in 2013 and since that time the company has dramatically grown its content. In 2016, Netflix released an estimated 126 series or movies.
